Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment. If you take medications regularly, you may take them with small sips (LESS THAN 1 OUNCE) of water. You may take your preoperative sedative as directed with small sips (LESS THAN 1 OUNCE) of water. Please do not take any antibiotic or steroid the morning of your surgery because it may make you nauseous on your empty stomach.
  • Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing with short sleeves that can easily be rolled up above both elbows. No sandals or flipflops.
  • No smoking at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, or upset stomach, please notify the office as a change of appointment may be necessary.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with either Dr. Brown or Neuwirth prior to your surgical date for instructions.
  • A responsible adult must accompany you to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive you home. The vehicle must remain at the office during surgery. Please make arrangements for someone to stay with you for a minimum of 8 hours after surgery or until you are fully recovered and can care for yourself.
  • You should not drive a vehicle, operate heavy or dangerous equipment, or perform activities requiring sound judgment or normal reactions for at least 24 hours after any form of sedation, general anesthesia, or while taking prescription strength pain medication or sedatives.
  • FEMALE PATIENTS: Please make sure you are not pregnant prior to the procedure.
