Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are increasingly popular with those who are unhappy about acne scarring, sun-damaged skin, age spots, freckles, fine lines, rough skin and uneven pigmentation.  Chemical peels are topically applied acids that aid in the restoration and rejuvenation of the skin’s surface. Chemical peels create a uniform and controlled shedding of several layers of the skin. Depending on the nature and depth of the peel, a significant number of layers can be exfoliated allowing new growth to be exposed, creating a fresh vibrant appearance. Pre-cancerous conditions such as keratoses (thick, rough, reddish growths) also respond well to this procedure.

The Procedure

There are several types of chemical peels:  superficial, medium, and deep. After thoroughly cleansing the skin, a small applicator is used to apply the chemical solution to an area of the face. Excess solution is removed and the procedure is repeated on other areas. This procedure typically takes approximately 1 hour to complete depending upon the areas being treated.

Postoperative Information

Recovery time will vary for each patient, however it is recommended to allow at least 8-10 days for redness, swelling, and peeling to subside. During the recovery process it is almost impossible to wear makeup. We recommend this treatment during the fall or winter months in order to keep sun exposure to a minimum. Sun protection is crucial to minimize the risks of side effects.

The amount of improvement varies and depends upon the initial condition of the patient's skin. Significant improvement of damaged skin has been achieved, which can produce dramatic results.
